Port of Rochester Marina
The Port of Rochester Marina opened in spring 2016, transforming acres of underutilized asphalt parking and ferry loading areas into an active public waterfront featuring a 158-slip marina, a new park, and a public promenade. The marina serves both seasonal and transient boaters, providing a key amenity for the downtown waterfront.
Excavation of the marina basin removed 98,000 cubic yards of regulated fill, and sustainable design features were incorporated, including pervious paving, bioinfiltration, sustainable Kebony decking, and individual metering. The project also completed the final link in a seven-mile public pedestrian promenade connecting downtown Rochester to Lake Ontario and spurred reinvestment in the former Terminal building.
Although the original master plan for a marina at this location was proposed in 1965, it wasn’t until 2012 that a detailed marina market analysis demonstrated strong demand for larger slips (60’-80’) and helped secure broad public support. In its first year, the marina achieved 56% occupancy at slip rates more than 20% higher than those initially recommended.
Funding and implementation combined local funds, bond funding, grants, and public-private partnerships to revitalize the local economy.
